Sixth Series -- "Bubba's Gone Huntin"
Water Quad with Blind
Bubba's Gone Huntin Quad ... the only quad in this year's Master National |
This is the first and only quad of this year's Master National and it continues to wow handlers and spectators. It is very exciting, sort of like the grand finale of a fireworks show. Even one Judge mentioned how much she would love to run her dogs on it. This test also has the distinction of being the only one for which there are two official MNRC photos, one for the quad and one for the blind. The Line is the same for both. The reason for the two photos is that this test is much wider than it is deep, as viewed from the Line. The MNRC was not able to fit it all into one photo.
View to the left of the last holding blind |
The Bubba Gunner is hunkered down at the base of the levy. Bubba 'shoots' the first bird, a 40 yarder that is launched, right to left, from a very visible winger perched in a boat that is beached at the end of the spit. This is the left bird, which is angled back. Some land on the spit; some land just beyond it.
The Line is to the right of the holding blind. The second bird down is the long (left-middle) at 80 yds. Next comes the flyer, which is the furthest to the right. It is launched straight out from the same levy as the Line, and averages 40 yds. All the flyer birds are sluiced as soon as they're down. At that moment, one of the Judges signals for the fourth bird which is launched from the next levy behind the handler and in an arc almost directly overhead.
Bubba's Gone Huntin Quad Blind ... the tricky part is the S-shaped spit |
The handler of Dog #82, the first in this Flight to run Bubba, commented, "You're so glad to be done with all those birds and you want to let it all out. Then, you remember you can't. You're not done."
Flight B:
Sixth Series -- "Donut Hole"
Water Triple with Double Blind
The "Donut Hole" test ... first venue for Flight A and the last for Flight B |
B's final test is the "Donut Hole" which they started at 4:00 pm on Saturday. It will take them about eight hours to complete so will be running well into Sunday. They stopped at 6:40 pm, later than intended. The ‘donut’ is on the far side of this kidney-shaped pond of running-water depth. It is, in essence, a reverse island, a circular mound with water in the middle.
All birds in this series are Drake Mallards and launched out of wingers. The first bird down is the flier, from the right station, intended to be at 50 yds. The station is completely concealed from the Line by tall, thick cover, referred to in these parts as “tules.” This bird is landing on the land on the far side of the pond. There is no way to be certain if the literal line will be through this cover, as this bird is a live shot flier. The middle bird is next, angled back to the left, at 70 yds. The go-bird is the longest, and angled back to the right, at 89 yards. The blinds are tight to one another. The 72 yd blind runs across the left side of the pond and the line to the 112 yd right blind runs close to its center.
This test venue either has been fraught with flyer launching difficulties or gunner crews who seem to have the flyer launchers under control. Live bird stations at this Master National have the usual challenges that come with live birds; but, there also is the challenge of working with a device most have never used nor even seen before. Instead of being thrown, the flyers are launched from a device that easily can be mistaken for a winger from the distance of the gallery. Some of the workers who have mastered the art of working with them this week seem particularly proud of themselves and eager to share their techniques.
This Flight already was running out of daylight when Dog #116 had a no-bird at 6:15 pm yesterday. It was decided to let the handler return to the Line last night, rather than making him wait until this morning, as long as there were no more no-birds.
While waiting in the holding blind as the obligatory three more dogs ran, the gallery nearby went buggy. The mosquitos haven't been around during daylight hours but have been making up for their absence as soon as it is dusk. Last night, when they began their assault on the gallery, the gallery fought back. Armed with cans of bug spray, some folks sprayed themselves, some sprayed each other, in a very kind and collected manner, and then someone noticed that there were swarms of mosquitos over certain people's heads.
Fascination with the odd occurence turned to a debate over whether they really were mosquitos, or whether they were gnats. People under the clouds of little varmits started to move around, hoping to get out from under their own personal, little dark clouds. That failed. Some of the afflicted, and some of the astonished onlookers began laughing. Perhaps they'd had too much sun this week, or too much of something else; but, they couldn't stop laughing, and that kind of laugh is contagious.
One person had the brainy idea that teensy, weensy bugs were no match for a can of spray and began spraying into one of the swarms. The aim was good, but the results weren't quite the same as aiming a shotgun at a bird, which led to more firepower. While all this was going on, they apparently forgot there was one more dog to run.
Well earned congratulations |
Dog #116 finally got to run this series and seemed to do so successfully, although it was getting so dark by then, it was hard to tell.
The handler seemed a tad perturbed that he had decided to handle, to play it safe. "I had a handle, so I used it," he told friends, as they rushed up to give him congratulatory hugs. "You did the right thing," several tried to assure him, while reminding him he actually had just made it, not just through one mess of a series, but through a Master National.
"That was a heart attack, in every way imaginable," was all he could say, with a look of relief, and disbelief.
CLOSING CEREMONIES
There was not a predetermined time for the Closing Ceremonies. They were expected to begin about an hour after the last Flight finished. The tent by the Clubhouse began to fill with people waiting for the final results. It has been overcast for the past two days, still miserably hot on Friday, then, finally, a pleasant temperature yesterday. The cloudiness has increased today, and then began getting darker. It seemed inconceivable that it actually could be chilly; but, some people began pulling warmer clothing out of their vehicles.
Janet Peters and assistants decorated the long head table with autumnal floral arrangements and pumpkins. The ribbons were arranged in impeccable order, the plates were stacked, bird bands in bowls, various pins were in piles. The Judges were inside the Clubhouse, completing their work. Handlers were reminded that the official event photographer was shooting pictures just outside the tent.

The
Closing
Ceremonies
began
at 3:20 pm.
Janet Peters thanked the many people who help make an event such as this possible, and announced that Janet Wood, Flight B Marshal, has earned her "Rookie of the Year Award." The audience was informed that the K9 Cancer organization will receive a $6,000 check in proceeds generated via this year's Master National.
Frankie, of Frankie's Party fame, took the mic to explain the Clayton Crawford Award, named for the late pro trainer from Delaware he described as "a great mentor and treasured friend" who had saved his life. Clayton died handling a dog on a water blind. Clayton used to tell his friends, Frankie added, that he wanted to die handling a dog or in a duck blind. The friends weren't too wild about that; but, were pleased that their buddy got to spend his last moments exactly as he wished. Clayton is one of the pioneers of the master national event, responding to the need to provide a means "for the average guy to showcase his dog."
Jay Phelps (R) ... wife Raelene and MNRC Sec/Treas Frank Barton |
The Award's recipient is someone whose "unconditional help and hard work made the current year's event a success," in the words of the MNRC, and is chosen by the Master National Board.
Frankie announced
that this year's recipient is
Event Chair Jay Phelps.
One last 'line' - this one went from right to left |
Qualifiers of the 2010 Master National were announced by Flight. Their handlers or owners were called individually to the front of the tent where they received the coveted Master National 'Plate,' ribbon and birdband. Each made their way along a long receiving line, efficiently spaced so that two or three were being congratulated at the same time, with handshakes and hugs.
The Closing Ceremonies
ended shortly before 5 pm
with the virtual
passing of the gavel from
Outgoing President Janet Peters
to new President John Marchica.
Congratulations to all the Qualifiers!
